also will find it hard to feel the bite.
2. Use a 100% strip set when setting the hook.

You can apply far more pressure and power in a hook set with a firm
strip set than you can with the fly rod. Many novice saltwater anglers
make the mistake of thinking the power comes from the fly rod.
3. Set the hook multiple times for better hook penetration.

When a tarpon eats from left or right often a single hook set will be
adequate because a lot of the time the weight of the fish moving aids in
setting the hook. However, when you have a tarpon eating and moving at
you it’s important to hit the fish multiple times while taking up slack
between hook sets. This will help maintain constant tension with the
fish.
4. Make sure you set the hook hard enough.

Don’t be
afraid to hit the tarpon extra hard. With their hard boney mouths it’s
crucial to get adequate power in your hook set to ensure you get full
penetration to the barb.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15413241991377354933noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245601008735902291.post-66346278840616004292013-07-21T23:28:00.001-04:002013-07-21T23:28:40.169-04:00Light Tackle Adventure Tarpon Fishing Video
We wanted to fish and were very lucky to find Light Tackle Adventures and Captain Pochy! We are amateur anglers but you wouldn't know it from the photos. If you want to make all your friends jealous, go fishing with Pochy! We caught a number of species of fish, including three monster Tarpon! Captain Pochy truly cares about your experience and shares his wealth of knowledge of the area. We had so much fun we went a second day on our five day trip to the island. We can't thank Pochy enough for this amazing experience, we will remember it always. See ya in five years Captain!
We like go saltwater fishing , first
question is where to go fishing and way go there? Puerto Rico
immediately came to my mind . the island of Puerto Rico is located just a
short 3 to 4 hour flight from any major city on the East coast of the
United States. Unknown to many, Puerto Rico offers some of the most
sensational fly fishing and light tackle opportunities in the World for
the Tarpon chaser. The West coast waters offer to any angler a fishing
paradise in the winter and summer. The West Coast offer multiples species
to challenge any Anglers. Spices like Tarpon ,Snook ,Ladyfish ,Jacks
,Snappers , Needelfish , Little tunny's , Barracudas. In Boqueron
Bay,Cabo Rojo Puerto Rico, as well as other parts of the country, there
is a whole other side to saltwater fishing opportunity to catch big
saltwater fish in shallow protected waters. Flats fishing is a common
term for fishing these shallow saltwater areas. The fishing is usually
done from a small skiff which is pushed across the “flat” by using a
long pole. This allows the anglers to get close to the spooky fish
giving them a chance to see the fish before they cast to them. Most
anglers use spinning or fly tackle sized to match the species they are
targeting. For popular species such as the Snook (Robalo) and Tarpon
(Sabalo), medium action spinning rods with 20 pound braided line is
sufficient, Fly Fishing rod 9 wt to 10 wt with big reel 300 yards of 30
pounds braided is good . Snook can reach sizes of over 50 inches and 35
pounds and are frequently caught in less than three feet of water. If
you are chasing big tarpon, some sturdier gear is necessary. Tarpon can
easily top 100 pounds and provide exciting aerial displays as they jump
out of the water in an attempt to shake the hook. Other species targeted
while flats fishing can include permit, bonefish, pompano, barracudas,
snook, jacks, and ladyfish. Flats fishing in Puerto Rico is popular
because it gives fishermen the chance to catch much larger fish than you
can in fresh water while still being able to use small boats in
protected waters. Many fishing guides offer charters for 1 or 2 anglers
while other can accommodate up to 4. Frequently, you can begin fishing
just minutes from the dock and sea sickness is not an issue like it can
be on offshore trips.

Made it down to Puerto Rico for a trip with some college buddies last weekend. Pretty fun place to party, semi expensive, but good food and scenery, and even better for fishing!!!!!

Went out with an awesome guide off the south west coast.

My guide fee splitting partner wasn't quite up to fly casting all day, but the guide had a good plan for that... live lining off the back, fly fishing off the front. Fished just offshore, on the beach, under marinas, lagoons and wayyyyy back in the mangroves.

Ended up with a handful of tarpon two the boat on fly (missed several), missed a few beasts on live bait. This was my third best one on fly, lost the other two right at the boat:

Caught a few nice ladyfish on both fly and live, man they fight hard!
Also got us a nice snook:
Weather was a BIG issue on the trip which limited the photos.

Franciso "Pochy" Rosario helped me land five (10lbs, 30lbs, 40lbs, 50lbs and 80lbs); one for each year. He's knowledge and experience put me on the fish quickly, giving me nonstop action all day. Also caught a few Jack Crevalle (Jurel) and Capt Pochy took me to his secret spot to catch a Snook (Robalo in Spanish) to complete my Gran Slam (catching three species of sport fish in one day). He did all he could do to make it happen, but it wasn't in the cards. I can't wait to return and fish with Capt Pochy again. He made it an experience of a life time.
Thank you
Learn to fly fish or hone your skills in just days with the world's best fishing instructors. Tarponhombre Fly-Fishing Schools make it easy and fun to learn terrific casting technique in spectacular locations with plenty of restaurants, shops, and activities for non-angling companions and family. You'll learn the skills you can use to fly fish anywhere in the world.
You can never know too much about any subject. Going to a school and obtaining the guidance of skill instructors is accepted as the quickest, most efficient way to learn. Learning comes in measured stages for most people. Rarely is complete knowledge of any technical subject obtainable in only one day. This progression from lower to upper grade status is obtainable only if the knowledge of the lower grade is well learned. For instance catching a frist Tarpon with a fly rod is only "achievable" if the angler has learned how to cast with a fly rod. An student who has taken the time to learn how to cast "well" with a fly rod can reach more Tarpon than one who hasn't.
The price of these fishing packages includes:
